Stephen Leggett is the Vice President of Servicing & Contact Centers for Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (TDECU), the largest credit union in Houston, and has responsibility for member servicing including customer service, collections, recoveries, and loss mitigation. Stephen has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry including credit cards, mortgage, auto finance, consumer lending and micro-finance.
He began his career in consumer lending working for a San Antonio based small loan lender with 25 locations serving the underbanked and subprime markets in Texas and Oklahoma. He then founded his own consumer lending company which he later sold to World Acceptance Corporation. After the sale, Stephen stayed on with World where he built and ran their Military Lending division, which operated in 5 states and had 11 branches. Stephen joined Providian Financial / WAMU in 2000 where he opened and ran several large-scale collections call centers. As Vice President of Operations, he had responsibility for the Company’s largest servicing center with over 1500 seats, managing a $2B portfolio of delinquent sub prime and near prime credit card accounts.
In 2004 he joined Toyota Financial Services, where he developed Toyota’s credit and collections strategy and performance management systems. In addition, he managed Toyota’s strategic business partnerships and was part of the team that launched the Lexus visa card in partnership with US Bank. Stephen then joined GC Services as their Senior Vice President where he led 8 servicing centers and almost 3000 employees providing BPO services for many Fortune 500 companies such as Capital One Auto, Sprint, GMAC, Nike and Apple in the collections, customer care and sales areas.
Stephen was part of the start up team for Opportune Financial providing small dollar loans to the Hispanic market. In 2009 Stephen put together a private equity deal that created Barri Financial Group a money service and lending company for targeting the underserved and unbanked market in Texas.
Stephen holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University and is a board member of the Texas Consumer Finance Association and the United Creditors Connect. He also serves on the Experian credit union advisory boar and the SWBC collections advisory board.
